Who are the set piece takers at each club?

Last modified date

This week Fantasy Football Scout’s Twitter account put out an excellent thread detailing the important set piece takers. Players on set piece duty make good targets for FPL managers. This is because they have the advance of additional routes to points because of the responsibility.

Targeting set-piece takers can be an effective strategy in FPL.

Here are the set-piece takers, in order, from every Premier League club in 2022/23.

The players are listed in order of prominence at dead-ball situations. This list is based on information gathered from last season’s matches. The data collected closer to Gameweek 38 is potentially more relevant and is therefore given more weight.

  • Penalties
  • Direct Free Kicks
  • Corners and Indirect Free Kicks

What does set piece duty mean for FPL?

When a player is on set-piece duty they become a more attractive FPL option. Owning a player with set piece responsibility gives them a greater route to points.

Route to points is when a player has multiple ways in which they can return FPL points. For example Trent Alexander-Arnold has multiple routs to FPL points. The defender has the potential for clean sheets and therefore defensive points. He puts in multiple crosses and therefore has the potential for assists from open play. In addition Alexader-Arnold also has set piece responsibility with both direct and indirect free kicks, as well as corners. Therefore the Liverpool defender makes an excellent FPL pick as his route to points is large and diverse. This is also true of other wing-backs, such as Chelsea’s Reece James and Ben Chilwell.

The more routes to points a player has, the most likelihood they have of returning bonus points too. This again adds to their appeal as it makes the likelihood of a points haul increase, making the player a more attractive buy.

If a player has penalties, free kicks or corners they have a higher percentage chance of returning FPL points. This is because they are most likely to have the ball in the correct areas to contribute to a goal involvement.

This season the £8.0m midfielders are a big talking point in the FPL community. At the start of the season FPL managers could make the decision between them based on set pieces. For example Saka has multiple routes to points, with responsibility for both penalties and corners. Meanwhile Foden has no set piece responsibility, this could make him a less attractive option. Therefore for FPL managers starting the season with Saka could be wise due to greater opportunities for returns.

Do set piece takers change?
