Community XI: The effect of VAR in FPL

Last modified date

VAR

We will see VAR in Fantasy Premier League for the first time this season.

Love it or hate it, the community provide the big debate on the effect of VAR in FPL 19/20 season.

1. Rogue

To kick things off, Wee Rogue shares the original economist VAR article, delving into the statistics on the overall effect globally. The system is responsible for minimising referee errors, but what does that mean for penalties awarded?

2. Copeland

James at Fantasy Bet has debated even further, concentrating on the effect VAR had in some of Europe’s biggest leagues as well as the Cup competitions. Perhaps the hype around penalties won’t be as large as anticipated.

3. Heisenberg

This topic has certainly got the community talking over on Twitter, with FPL Heisenberg putting his neck on the line. Will we see another total over the 100 mark for the Fantasy Premier League 2019/20 season?

4. Lego

FPLego also looks through the impact in some of Europe’s leagues: we have to be reminded here of the small sample size and differing degrees of leniency compared to the Premier League, but things don’t look promising.

5. Stat

Despite the warnings above, there’s no harm in targeting a few high profile penalty takers in the league. Stat on Scout has crunched the numbers over a longer period, with a great argument for the likes of Milivojevic and Vardy. https://twitter.com/statonscout/status/1147584699994427392?s=21

6. Fix

One partnership that brought plenty of FPL points last season was Zaha winning penalties for Milivojevic to convert. Zaha is one of the most tackled players in the league and could be worth considering.

7. Stat Man

Looking in the short term once more, it’s Manchester United joining Crystal Palace and Leicester in the top 3. With Paul Pogba rumoured to be leaving Old Trafford, it remains to be seen who may take up the spot kick mantle.

8. Secrets

It was Pogba who benefited from Manchester United winning the most penalties last season. Could Josh King be the choice for Bournemouth if they can maintain their figures? Things were less lucrative for Troy Deeney and Watford.

9. Guy

For FPL managers wanting to target spot kick takers in the hope of penalties, FPL Guy shares a comprehensive list from Fantasy Football Scout. How many will you own?

10. Vs

FPL Vs is serious about embracing spot kick takers this season with VAR in mind. It’s certainly possible to get 8 penalty takers, with Matt Ritchie emerging as a defensive option now his position has been changed.

11. Drew

Drew from Fantasy Football Pundits has created a side of penalty takers to embrace VAR. This squad balances those sides with a decent penalty taking record, merging premium assets. Could it be an option?   BEFORE YOU GO… Be sure to check out the rest of our Community XI pre-season series: —> Community XI: FPL Drafts —> Community XI: 11 Players for FPL —> Community XI: Five Man Defence
