Optimising a Gameweek 38 Free Hit

Some FPL managers have held their final Free Hit chip for the final Gameweek of the season. Chris Hindle from FPL Updates&Tips is one of those managers. He has shared with us his first draft as well as how he plans to optimise a his Gameweek 38 Free Hit.
If, like me, you’re playing a Free Hit Chip in Gameweek 38 here are some ideas about how you might best seek to optimise it.
- Target fixtures with high xG teams playing high xGC teams. This means focusing on games like Leicester v Southampton, Norwich v Spurs, Chelsea v Watford, Liverpool v Wolves.
- Target teams with something still to play for and / or who still seem motivated & are in good form
- Target explosive, high upside players capable of 15 point hauls
- Include a couple of punts that non Free Hitter managers are unlikely to include
- Have two playing outfield subs to allow for final day rotation
- Include some budget enablers for the starting XI and for the bench
- Get your Free Hit Chip activated straight away so that you benefit from any price rises that occur between now and the deadline
Sample Free Hit team

With Gameweek 37 still in play this draft is not yet finalised. Those midweek fixtures and line-ups need very closely monitoring in terms of injury and possible rotation.
With this draft the squad value was £105.1m and there is £0.9m left in the bank.
Wider player pool to consider
There are a number of players not included here that FPL managers should consider.
- Chelsea: Alonso, Mount & Lukaku
- Liverpool: TAA, Diaz, Mane, Salah, Jota
- Leicester: Barnes
- Brentford: Toney
- Spurs: Kulusevski
- Man City: Cancelo, Foden, Mahrez & Jesus
- Burnley: Cornet
Personally I wouldn’t look any further than the squad created as well as these additional players.
Captaincy
If you’re chasing mini league and overall rank deficits, roll the dice on a lower ownership captain pick. KDB for example is still just 15.9% owned at the time of writing. Similarly, the Leicester lads are all < 20%. If you’re protecting leads then Son or Kane are probably good captaincy choices.
Enjoy the tinkering!
