MLS Fantasy top picks for Round 19

Last modified date

With the new set of MLS fixtures approaching we take a look at the top picks for Round 19. Twitter is full of some of the best fantasy managers in the world so we bring in expert @dmpwright to reel off some of the best options for the big round ahead.

Looking at the top picks for Round 19 can be extremely useful to MLS Fantasy managers. Focusing on some of the best assets for the new week could help with some of the most important decisions in the game like transfers and captaincy.

Round 19

After a seemingly interminable run of double Gameweeks, we’re finally back to a single Gameweek in Round 19 (phew!), with Charlotte the only team on a bye.

Top targets – Gabriele Corbo, CF Montreal – Defender, $7.8m

There seem to be a few decent clean sheet shouts in Round 19, so I’ve doubled down on defensive picks for my top targets. The first is Gabriele Corbo. Montreal are on an incredible run of seven home clean sheets in a row and have every chance of another shutout this week against an NYCFC attack that’s staler than old bread.

Corbo has been an integral part of Montreal’s recent success and has quickly established himself as their defensive Fantasy asset of choice, amassing 44 points in his last four home games, including a herculean 39 ball recoveries in that time.

Walker Zimmerman, Nashville SC – Defender, $8.4m

The first of a Nashville double-up this week, Walker Zimmerman hasn’t seen much MLS action of late due to injury and international duty. Nashville’s defence is considerably stronger with Zimmerman in the team. I expect them to keep a clean sheet against DC United, while the Stars and Stripes centre half also poses decent attacking threat. He ranks fourteenth among defenders for xG+xA per game (0.18).

Hany Mukhtar, Nashville SC – Midfielder, $14.4m

So, who else got burned by the reigning MLS MVP in Round 18? They say hindsight is twenty-twenty, but maybe we expected too much from Hany Mukhtar in two objectively tricky away games. However, as I’ve mentioned before, Mukhtar at home is an entirely different prospect and he continues to lead all midfielders for xG+xA per game (0.77).

While DC United boast impressive away defensive numbers and come into Round 19 off the back of an impressive 3-0 victory over high-flying FC Cincinnati, I am still strongly considering captaining Mukhtar this week.

Differential – Duncan McGuire, Orlando City – Forward, $6.2m

Duncan McGuire has the second highest rate of goals scored per game in MLS (0.90) and is third for shots on target per game among all players (1.94). With few stand-out forward options this round and the prospect of a home matchup against a Chicago team that is bottom-half in MLS for xGA (1.52) and xShtA (15.10) per away game, Big Dunc could be the perfect bench play.
