Early events

Immediately after the 11am deadline, rumours began to swirl that both Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold were only on the bench to face Newcastle. Those rumours were correct, hence captainers going into meltdown.

It was a calculated risk by Jurgen Klopp that paid off with a scrappy but comfortable 1-0 win. Salah made a one-point appearance but Alexander-Arnold remained unused. So the big FPL winners were owners of Andrew Robertson.

Further team news arrived at 2pm, where both Wilfried Zaha and Armando Broja were named on their benches. Eyebrows raised in unison at the appearance of Lucas Digne – supposedly injured for the rest of the season. He randomly appeared in Aston Villa’s starting XI.

All four games were 1-0 at half-time. In came a goal for Ollie Watkins, an assist for James Ward-Prowse and two penalties for Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister. His first hit the post but a chance at redemption came shortly after, which he successfully converted.

Later on

The second half was quiet until a late spurry of goals headlined by Burnley’s dramatic turnaround to win at Watford. It was without Wout Weghorst though – taken off after 59 minutes for just one FPL point. Zaha came on and scored Crystal Palace’s winner but Broja and Philippe Coutinho were disappointing blanks.

With Liverpool leapfrogging Man City earlier in the day, Pep Guardiola provided his own big-name benchings. Midfielders Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva the ‘Pep Roulette’ victims this time.

Leeds put up a spirited performance but Man City ran out 4-0 winners, thanks partly to Gabriel Jesus’ goal and two Phil Foden assists. Clean sheets also arrived for Joao Cancelo and Aymeric Laporte, alongside frustration that the other two defenders – Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake – combined for one goal.

Cancelo also missed a big chance to score late on. Unlike Bernardo, De Bruyne stayed on the bench for all 90 minutes, with Wednesday’s Real Madrid clash in mind.

Overall, 16 goals and four clean sheets arrived in Saturday’s six matches. Up next are three Sunday clashes, involving Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Leicester, Tottenham and West Ham. Then, it’s Man United vs Brentford on Monday night.
