Gameweek 38: How have recent final days unfolded in FPL?

Last modified date

As we approach Gameweek 38 of the 2021/22 season, let’s see how the action has proceeded during the last three finales.

Last season, there was no final day draws. With Man City already confirmed as champions and relegation already decided, the main drama involved the final two Champions League spots. Despite Bertrand Traore‘s brace defeating Chelsea, the Blues still joined Liverpool in the top four due to Leicester’s loss.

The week’s highest-scoring player was West Ham’s Pablo Fornals, bringing in 19 points versus Southampton. Jamie Vardy and Gareth Bale scored 13 points apiece in their clash at the King Power Stadium. Overall, there were 31 goals and six clean sheets.

What may interest FPL managers is the Kevin De Bruyne haul that secured a 5-0 home win for Man City.

2019/20 season

Because exactly the same happened one year previously. Technically down as Gameweek 47 because of the long Covid-enforced break, De Bruyne bagged 19 points as Man City won 5-0 at home to Norwich.

Although Aston Villa may be expected to put up more of a challenge than Everton and Norwich – especially with Steven Gerrard’s Liverpool loyalties – you’d not rule out another big win for the league leaders.

33 goals and three clean sheets took place, including two goals for both Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Che Adams. The league title was already secured at Liverpool but there was another battle for the final two Champions League spots. Chelsea claimed one thanks to Mason Mount and Marcos Alonso, whilst Bruno Fernandes helped Man United defeat Leicester and take the other.

Additionally, Aston Villa snatched final day survival with a draw at West Ham.

2018/19 season

Similar to this time, Man City entered the final day one point ahead of Liverpool. They overcame an early scare to emerge as 4-1 winners at Brighton, helped by Riyad Mahrez. Hauls from Sadio Mane and Trent Alexander-Arnold against Wolves ultimately meant nothing.

Meanwhile, already-relegated Cardiff pulled off a 2-0 win at Man United because of the week-high score of Nathaniel Mendez-Laing. This time, the traditional high-scoring bonanza took place at Selhurst Park, with two Michy Batshuayi goals helping Crystal Palace beat Bournemouth 5-3. Overall, 36 goals and five clean sheets took place.

In conclusion, expect drama, a shock result, one with many goals and at least 30 to be netted in total. Oh, and expect a heavy Man City victory.
