@FPLReaction' first FPL draft

FPL and the World Cup

Last modified date

This season the Premier League will have a break during November and December. The break is to allow for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. We explain what we know about how FPL will manage the break.

The release of FPL 2022/23 on Tuesday let to a lot of excitement, especially on social media. FPL managers raced to get the lowest Team IDs and set up their first drafts.

Eagle eyed managers looked at the rules section in order to understand how FPL are managing the World Cup.

The Rule

The rule states that there will be an unlimited transfer window between the 12th of November and the 26th of December. This means that whilst the World Cup is happening managers will be able to make as many transfers as they want without any additional costs. This is like having an extra Wildcard.

What this means for FPL managers

FPL managers effectively have a third Wildcard for the 2022/23 season.

Wildcard one – Active post Gameweek 1 to be played before 12th November at 13:30

Unlimited Transfers – 12th of November 13:30 and the 26th of December 13:30

Wildcard two – December 26th at 13:30 onwards

Managers will therefore be able to completely change their teams three times this season. This means that many FPL managers will likely look to play their first Wildcard relatively early on in the season, knowing that they only have 16 Gameweeks to navigate ahead of the World Cup break.

Having the unlimited transfer window is excellent for managers as it means that they can react to events at the World Cup. If players get injured they can be transferred out and managers can also target form.

Managers will also be able to consider game time over the World Cup, especially with those players who make it to the final. FPL managers may want to make changes ahead of the Boxing Day fixtures for those players who get a long way in the World Cup.
