Community XI: The Best FPL Defenders for Fantasy Premier League 2019/20

Last modified date

Defenders

FPL managers are backing the premium defenders for their Fantasy Premier League Gameweek 1 team.

It’s the Fantasy Football Community bringing their defenders roundup of articles, videos and tweets for your Fantasy Premier League Tips.

1. WGTA

All of the early pre-season hype was aimed at the premium defenders Laporte, Alexander-Arnold, Robertson and Digne. WGTA christened this premium quartet L-A-R-D, but with Zinchenko looking set to start the season for Manchester City, many are tempted to adopt Z-A-R-D for a one million pound saving.

2. Andy

However, its not just the big premium options that are being tipped. Gameweek 38 hero and founder of the League of Doing Bits, Patrick Van Aanholt is being tipped by Let’s Talk FPL’s Andy. There’s some tasty early fixtures, but Crystal Palace will be starting the season with a depleted backline.

3. Tips

FPL Tips advises plenty of premium options in his latest YouTube video. The choice between Liverpool defenders is tricky, with Andrew Robertson, Virgil Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold all prominent options. It’s the youngster who ended last season in the best form, but a double up could be a clever move.

4. James

Saving 0.5 million by going for Virgil Van Dijk over one of Liverpool’s full backs could be a canny way of saving cash and making upgrades elsewhere. In a very popular Twitter thread, FPL James considers a number of potential downgrades and values their worth.

5. Pundits

It’s Virgil Van Dijk at his friendlier price who’s leading the defenders ownership charts, thanks to the Fantasy Football Pundits. Many FPL managers will be put off by investing seven million pounds in one defensive player. Wan-Bissaka is popular following his big money move and price hike at Manchester United.

6. Nick

Nick from popular podcast Who Got The Assist? sees Lucas Digne as an excellent option for his Gameweek 1 team. It’s a convincing argument: this volatile player prevailed across the statistics charts in his last campaign and has a tempting run of opening fixtures.

7. Thread

FPDontTakeTheL has spotted an intriguing defensive rotation which avoids the traditional top six for all 38 gameweeks. With credible defences Wolves and West Ham in the mix, you could net this budget rotation at under 10 million, giving flexibility elsewhere.

8. Editor

Another potential rotation coming in even cheaper is Leicester and West Ham: it could be a decent run for the opening 12 gameweeks, which for many FPL managers will take them to their first wildcard. The rumoured move of Lewis Dunk to Leicester needs to happen for this to come in at a viable price.

9. Chris

Chris of FPL FC is tipping Zinchenko as a great option to start the season with. It’s certainly looking to be a viable option with Mendy out for the opening weeks. The fixtures look great and he’s a cheap way into one of the best defences in the league – just keep an eye out for new signing Angelino. https://twitter.com/fpl_fc/status/1152185043348946944?s=21

10. Clarke

Clarke Hutchinson from Fantasy Bet has produced an excellent guide to defenders. His articles span across the price ranges and also includes an excellent feature on potential rotations of the 4.5 million priced defensive assets. It’s a series well worth checking out.

11. Drew

Aaron Wan-Bissaka was last seasons budget bench player of choice, and it looks like his deputy could follow in his footsteps. Martin Kelly is now the first choice right back at Crystal Palace: his bonus points potential is less superior than his predecessor, but you can’t go wrong with a 4.0 million starter. This article is the second in a positional series, check it out:  —> Goalkeepers —> Midfielders —> Community XI: The Best FPL Forwards for Fantasy Premier League 2019/20
