How to play FPL

Last modified date

We look at how to play FPL (Fantasy Premier League). With the help of the Official Fantasy Premier League website we help to explain the basics. From how to register, to rules, how to score points and more, we cover everything a beginner needs to play.

FPL has become one of the fastest growing and biggest fantasy football games in the world with over 10 million players in the most recent season. Looking at how to play FPL can give you everything you will need to know to begin your season.

How to play?

You must pick a squad of 15 players from the Premier League, who score points for your team based on their performances for their clubs in PL matches.

How to register?

To play Fantasy Premier League for the first time, you must register on the FPL site.

Head over to fantasy.premierleague.com to register your account by submitting an email address, setting up a password and then confirming your email address.  Once you have set up your account and chosen a team name you are ready to start playing.

Captain

Captaincy is absolutely key towards the success of any given FPL season. As we can see below, after selecting our captain, that player will earn double points. In the event that our captain does not feature, the player we select as our vice captain will replace him.

Prioritising our bench

How we prioritise our substitute bench is also a very important factor in FPL. Below is a good example of how and why it is so important.

Transfers

As we can see, the game allocates managers one free transfer every Gameweek. We can carry just one free transfer over, giving us a maximum of two free transfers in any given round. If we decide that one free transfers is not enough, then managers can make additional transfers. However, each additional transfer after using the free transfer means a minus four point hit.

Chips

Chips are like boosts and are provided by the game to boost our performance in any given Gameweek. Managers will receive four chips in total which include the Bench Boost, Free Hit, Triple Captain and the Wildcard.

Scoring

How players score points is a key contributing factor towards how we build our squads and the decisions we make with transfers, captaincy and more. Below is a general list on how players are awarded points for their efforts.

Bonus points

Other than the standard list of points above, players will also receive bonus points based on their good performances. Clean sheets, goals, and assists are all huge contributing factors towards which players players receive those additional points.
