What is FPL?

Last modified date

We answer something that could be on the minds of many as it grows ever bigger season upon season, what is FPL? Looking at the basics, rules, structure, how to join in and more to help you understand the size and framework of one of the fastest growing trends.

What is FPL? Firstly, FPL is a shortened and well used version of Fantasy Premier League. As many can tell, Fantasy Premier League is based on the first division of English football. It is also a game that anyone around the world can play.

How to play?

You must pick a squad of 15 players from the Premier League, who score points for your team based on their performances for their clubs in PL matches.

Prices are given to players based on the number of FPL points they are projected to deliver and managers are limited to a budget of £100.0m for their 15-man squad.

How to register?

To play Fantasy Premier League for the first time, you must register on the FPL site.

Head over to fantasy.premierleague.com to register your account by submitting an email address, setting up a password and then confirming your email address.  Once you have set up your account and chosen a team name you are ready to start playing.

Here is an example of how your team could look after a given Gameweek:

How to earn points in FPL

Managers can earn point from their players via goals, assists, clean sheets and save points. Players can also earn additional bonus points in Fantasy as a reward for a good performance in a match (see the Bonus Points System for more).

Captaincy is also a very important method of earning points. Managers will select a player whom they think will score the most points for each and every Gameweek as captain. Players selected as captain earn double points.

Transfers

After building your team based on the fixtures, budget limit and players you want in your team for any reason, your nearly ready to go. However, one very important factor to consider is transfers. Managers are provided with one free transfer per week. Managers can utilise the free transfer in any which way they choose.

Players are only able to save one free transfer per Gameweek. This means that managers can also have a maximum of two free transfers to use in any given week. If a manager wants to use any transfers after using their allocated one transfer, then each transfer after that will cost minus four points.
