MLS Fantasy top picks for Round 15

Last modified date

With the new set of MLS fixtures approaching we take a look at the top picks for Round 15. Twitter is full of some of the best fantasy managers in the world so we bring in expert @dmpwright to reel off some of the best options for the big round ahead.

Looking at the top picks for Round 15 can be extremely useful to MLS Fantasy managers. Focusing on some of the best assets for the new week could help with some of the most important decisions in the game like transfers and captaincy.

Round 15

Double gameweek season is well and truly here in MLS Fantasy with Round 15 kicking off this Wednesday 31 May. LAFC are on a bye as they play both legs of the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) Final this week. Atlanta, LA Galaxy, Nashville, Orlando, Portland and St Louis City are the only teams to feature once this round.

Top targets – Kai Wagner, Philadelphia Union – Defender, $9.6m

I could have picked a Philadelphia player in each position for this article, such is the strength of their double gameweek schedule (vs Charlotte and Montreal, both at home). I would strongly consider Dániel Gazdag and Julián Carranza for this round as well. However, if I could only select one Philadelphia player, it would probably be Kai Wagner. The Union stand a good chance of two clean sheets this round. Wagner also shares set pieces and boasts decent offensive numbers, including the third-highest number of key passes per game (1.62) among all defenders.

Lucas Zelarayán, Columbus Crew – Midfielder, $12.2m

This is the definition of a no-brainer. Columbus have arguably as good if not better fixtures than Philadelphia for their double gameweek (vs Colorado and Charlotte, both at home). Lucas Zelarayán, who is in the top ten for goals, shots and shots on target, will be among the top choices for captaincy this round.

Cucho Hernández, Columbus Crew – Forward, $10.3m

Along with Carranza, Cucho Hernández should be one of the first forwards in your team this week. He’s scored six+ points in his last five outings. His returns include one goal and five (!) assists in that period. He also ranks first and sixth among all forwards for shots (5.41) and xG+xA (0.63) per game, respectively. Given the Crew’s double gameweek fixtures, he’s as much of a no-brainer as Zelarayán!

Differential- Gabriel Pereira, New York City FC – Midfielder, $8.8m

The New York City FC attack hasn’t looked particularly slick so far this season. In fact, it ranks 19th and 22nd in MLS for shots and xGF per game, respectively. They do play twice at Yankee Stadium. However, and for that reason Gabriel Pereira could be worth a punt. While his xG+xA per game is identical to Santi Rodríguez’s (0.38), Pereira ranks higher than his teammate for key passes, shots and shots on target.
