Best defenders for Gameweek 38

Last modified date

With the final round of Fantasy Premier League approaching we look at the best defenders for Gameweek 38. Using the Fantasy Football Scout members area to utilise its fixture ticker and underlying stats, we provide plenty of defender options with the most potential.

There is just one final round for fantasy managers to try to gain rank or an edge of their mini-league rival. Because of this it could be vital to highlight some of the best defenders for Gameweek 38 in the hope they will help us do exactly that.

Fixtures

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool have a great final fixture against Southampton in Gameweek 38. The already relegated Saints have nothing to play for and their offensive ineffectiveness can be seen in fact that they rank the second worst for goals scored this campaign.

Because of the above Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.8m) could have solid clean sheet potential. However, he also offers much more from an attacking point of view. In fact, the free-kick taker has bagged six assists, a goal and three clean sheets in his last 10 league matches.

Pervis Estupinan

Brighton have been surprisingly strong this season. One of their strengths have been in defence. So far when compared to all teams in the division they rank the second best for shots on target conceded (122), and fourth best for total attempts conceded (363) and big chances conceded (64).

With the above in mind, Brighton could have clean sheet potential going into any given match. However, they also have a defender who offers much more than that. Amongst all defenders in the last six Gameweeks Pervis Estupinan (£5m) ranks third for non-penalty expected goal involvement (1.94). The full-back also claimed a huge 17-point haul in one of his most recent games with a goal, assist and a clean sheet, highlighting his potential.

Kieran Trippier

Newcastle face Chelsea this week. The Blues have been in a torrid run of form as of late. In fact, Chelsea have lost seven of their last 10 matches in all competitions. In that same period they also failed to score in six of their games. This suggests that Chelsea are struggling offensively.

A Newcastle clean sheet could be on the cards this week. Even if it isn’t, Kieran Trippier (£6m) has other routes to points. The full-back takes corners and free-kicks which adds to his appeal. Another factor backing him is that he dominates most of the distribution data amongst defenders this campaign.

Other great options

  • Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson (£6.8m).
  • Tottenham’s Pedro Porro (£4.8m).
  • Manchester United’s Luke Shaw (£5.3m).
  • Arsenal’s Ben White (£5m).
