The best captain for Gameweek 29

Last modified date

We find the best captain for Gameweek 29. With the help of the Fantasy Football Scout members area we can use the season ticker and underlying stats to find the best captaincy option for the Gameweek ahead.

Captaincy is one of the most important decisions a manager can make in fantasy football. Writing up a shortlist of options can be helpful but picking out the best captain for Gameweek 29 can be even more important for FPL managers.

Fixture ticker

Below you can see teams near the top with the easier fixtures, going all the way down the table to teams with the tougher fixtures. The season ticker can be very helpful. However, won’t always give us the full story on which players make the best captaincy options.

The options – Alexis Mac Allister

Brighton sit third on the fixture ticker this week. They have games against Bournemouth and Brentford. Brighton have been great this season. That can be reflected in their offensive stats. This season they rank amongst the best five teams for goals scored (46), shots in the box (246), big chances total (71) and shots on target (138). This indicates that the Brighton frontline is reliably consistent.

Interestingly both of Brighton’s opponents rank as the two worst teams in the league for shots on target conceded this season. Bournemouth also rank the worst for shots in the box conceded (79), the worst for shots on target conceded (39) and joint second worst for big chances conceded (17) in the last six Gameweeks.

Alexis Mac Allister (£5.5m) is becoming increasingly appealing as both an asset and a captaincy option. The midfielder takes set pieces and penalties. He has also taken up a new advanced position at the heart of the Brighton attack. The Argentinian has managed to pick up 24 points in his last three games. That averages to eight points per match. Amongst all players in the league in the last six matches Mac Allister also ranks fourth for non-penalty expected goal involvement (4.05).

Marcus Rashford

This season amongst all teams in the league Manchester United rank amongst the best six teams for attempts on goal (366), big chances total (228), minutes per chance (6.8) and shots on target (134). This shows that the Reds have maintained some great offensive stats this season.

Manchester United face Newcastle and Brentford in Gameweek 29. Brentford rank in the top two worst sides in the league for shots on target conceded this season. Whilst Manchester United’s other opponent, Newcastle, have sustained some of the best defensive data this campaign. However we have seen a dip in their recent performances. An example of that is the fact they have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last six games.

Marcus Rashford (£7.3m) has become one of the most reliable assets in the game. The winger has racked up 14 goals and three assists already this season. Since the restart Rashford ranks fourth amongst all players in the league for non-penalty expected goal involvement (7.20) whilst also ranking joint first for goals scored (10) in the same period.

Bukayo Saka

Arsenal will be looking to extend their relentless run this season and maintain their top of the pile position in first place. Although Arsenal have just one fixture, other factors should be taken into account before disregarding their assets in terms of captaincy.

This season amongst all teams in the league Arsenal have sustained some of best attacking data. This can only be reinforced when looking into their most recent data. In the the last six matches amongst all teams they rank first for goals (21), first for attempts on goal (139), first for shots in the box (88) and first for shots on target (41).

Arsenal face a very unsteady Leeds side in Gameweek 29. In fact, Leeds rank the joint second worst team in the league this season for big chances conceded (75). They have also conceded two goals in three of their last six matches, keeping just one clean sheet in the same period.

It could be wise to not only hang onto Bukayo Saka (£8.6m) this week, but consider him for the captaincy. In the last six matches amongst all players in the league Saka ranks second for goals (five), second for attempts on goal (26) and first for shots in the box (18). The midfielder also takes his sides penalties giving him an additional route to points.

Conclusion

Bukayo Saka is a fantastic player and his potential to outscore any double Gameweek can be reflected in his 18-point return in his previous game. However, the fact he only has one game still remains and because of that, the other two options edge him.

Alexis Mac Allister could also be a great option but he has failed to show positional and FPL consistency all season which raises doubts. Marcus Rashford is the best captain for Gameweek 29. The winger has become talismanic for his side this season and his consistency is key to claiming that all important captaincy armband.
