Captaincy is one of the most important decisions a manager can make. Writing up a shortlist of options can be helpful. Picking out the best however can be even more important for FPL managers.
Fixture ticker
Below you can see teams near the top with the easier fixtures, going all the way down the table to teams with the tougher fixtures. The season ticker can be very helpful. However, won’t always give us the full story on which players make the best captaincy options.
We can see teams like Newcastle and Nottingham Forest near the top of the fixture ticker. However, none of those teams offer up a consistent asset for the captaincy.
The options- Mitrovic
Fulham do not come near the top for any key underlying offensive data points. However, they face a meeting against Nottingham Forest. Amongst all teams in the league, they are the third worst for goals conceded, third worst for shots in the box conceded and the worst for shots on target conceded.
Mitrovic (£6.9m) has started the season exceptionally. The Serbian striker now resides as the seventh highest scoring player in FPL. We can see that reflected in his returns so far. In the six matches played this season he has only failed picking up a goal contribution in just one of them.
The Fulham man also has fantastic underlying offensive stats. Amongst all players in the league so far, he is second for goals scored, first for attempts on goal, second for attempts in the box and second for big chances total.
Haaland
Man City remain one of the most dangerous teams in the Premier League. Amongst all teams they are first for goals scored, first for goals in the box and first for big chances total. They face Wolves in Gameweek 8 who have been reasonably good in terms of underlying defensive stats.
Halaand (£12m) reigns at the top of the pile. The Man City forward is currently both, the highest owned player and the highest scoring player in FPL. Haaland is yet to fail in registering an attacking return in any game so far. In three of the six matches the striker has also picked up a double digit return.
His amazing points returning ability is also highlighted in his underlying offensive stats. Amongst all players in the league, he is first for goals scored, first for goals scored in the box, second for total attempts on goal, first for attempts in the box and first for big chances total.
Kane
Amongst all teams in the league, Tottenham sit in the top five for total attempts on goal and total attempts in the box. They also make the top six teams for goals scored and goals scored in the box. Spurs have a meeting against Leicester in Gameweek 8. The Foxes are the second worst team for goals conceded and the second worst for big chances conceded.
Kane (£11.4m) has now returned in five of his six matches and sits as the fourth highest scoring player in FPL. In addition, amongst all players he is joint third for goals scored, third for attempts on goal, and fourth for attempts in the box and big chances total.
Conclusion
Although Kane and Mitrovic play defensively poor opponents and have great attacking stats, it may not be enough. Both Fulham and Tottenham have been inconsistent at times and none of their teams boast goal threat stats like Man City.
Haaland becomes the standout captaincy option. Not only do his team offer up some of the best attacking stats in the league but Haaland himself also has superior offensive stats. For those reasons, Haaland edges both Mitrovic and Kane.
