What To Expect From Chelsea in 22/23

Last modified date

Here we will take a look at how Tuchel and Chelsea will line-up up in the new season. We will look at systems, personnel used last season and potential signings to determine the Chelsea potential setup.

Chelsea are likely to be popular picks for FPL managers again during the 2021/22 season. They are also likely to command high price tags. Therefore understanding their style of play as well as potential incomings will be key to investing in the Blues correctly for the 2022/23 season.

System and Style 21/22

Tuchel has implemented a more cautious and measured approach in contrast to his Dortmund days. The 4-3-3 system allows a much stable setup and for a more possession based team. Attacking with 5 players but also defending with 5 players with the help of wing backs. This shape allows for lots of triangles and passing lanes to keep possession. Check out the example below.

This system and playing this way was the go to for manager Tuchel and played it in some of Chelsea’s biggest games against the likes of Liverpool in the cup final and Real Madrid in the Champions League. For that reason I think he will stick to this system going into the new campaign.

Personnel

Losing Chilwell was a huge loss for Tuchel and Chelsea at Left wing back for the majority of the season. Reece James the wing back on the opposite side also had several injuries through the season too, both hugely significant to the way Tuchel liked to play.

Form also had a separate impact on personnel. Lukaku failed to impress with the likes of Pulisic, Ziyech and Werner. All of this combined triggered mass rotation throughout the season. Key players Mount and Havertz came through as first team players, Mount especially.

Transfers/Outgoings

The Chelsea back-line has took a significant hit in terms of losses of the recent weeks. Christensen has officially moved to Barcelona and Rudiger has also officially moved to Real Madrid. Already a massive hole to fill and it doesn’t stop there. Chelsea Veterans Azpilicueta and Alonso have also been linked to moves back Spain, see below.

With that in mind Chelsea could potentially lose four key defenders during the transfer window. Although my opinion is that we lose just Alonso and end up extending Azpilicueta’s contract who can cover both the RWB and RCB positions in the Tuchel system.

Lukaku seems to be where most of the Chelsea transfer energy is going. Multiple sources are now stating that a loan deal with Inter could soon be in place. If this does go ahead it means two things. The first point to note is that it would make Havertz a more nailed FPL option. Secondly If Lukaku does go it could mean Chelsea then put their energy into bringing players in.

Transfers/Incomings

With the change of ownership potentially being the reason for the slow start to transfer movement and the Lukaku saga seemingly taking over, Chelsea are yet to make any official signings which is of course worrying for fans. However, the new owner has released a 200 million ‘war chest’ and given Tuchel full command of that money according to various Chelsea sources.

No Transfers yet but lots of rumours and gossip. The Chelsea rumours have ties to a variety of different players and positions like Sterling, De Ligt, Koulibaly, Dembele, Raphinha, Kimpembe but the strongest of rumours have been to Kounde of Sevilla, see below.

Expected/Predicted Line-up 22/23

Based on the players linked with Chelsea so far this window, they could line-up like this for the 2022/23 season.
