Early events

The FA Cup semi-finals caused a few weekend blanks, so only four matches took place today. Tottenham kicked things off with a straightforward-looking home clash with Brighton. However, the ‘never back the early game’ motto reared its ugly head again, with Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski all blanking in a 1-0 defeat. The latter could easily have been sent off for a first half elbow.

The big news of the 2pm team sheets saw the rumours of Alexander Lacazette missing out come true. A positive Covid test likely rules him out for midweek as well. Meanwhile, Che Adams was surprisingly benched for Southampton whilst Armando Broja returned to the line-up.

It didn’t take long for Cristiano Ronaldo to reward those who purchased him on a Free Hit. He scored two goals by half-time, although Man United soon lost their clean sheet. Southampton and Brentford were also leading by the break, with Bukayo Saka being denied by a fantastic Fraser Forster save.

Simultaneously, the FPL Community were also keeping tabs on the FA Cup clash between Man City and Liverpool. Zack Steffen made a huge error for Liverpool’s second goal and Jurgen Klopp’s men held on to win 3-2.

Later on

Norwich was impressive on the attack at Old Trafford and it was no surprise to see them equalise through Teemu Pukki. Nevertheless, the headlines belonged to Ronaldo. He netted a rare free-kick to complete his 60th career hat-trick.

Elsewhere, Emmanuel Dennis equalised for Watford but a stoppage time Pontus Jansson winner provided a Christian Eriksen assist. Great saves from Fraser Forster kept Arsenal at bay, as the Gunners failed to take advantage of Spurs’ earlier defeat.

Overall, ten goals and two clean sheets arrived in Saturday’s four matches. Up next are two Sunday clashes, involving Newcastle, Leicester, West Ham and Burnley. This Double Gameweek also brings six midweek matches.
