Best picks from Burnley for Double Gameweek 33
Burnley play twice in Double Gameweek 33. So let’s assess their best FPL options ahead of matches against West Ham and Southampton.
Having been unable to build on the momentum of back-to-back wins in Double Gameweek 26, Burnley had a great opportunity to follow Wednesday’s late victory over Everton with more success. Yet the disappointing 2-0 defeat to Norwich was not only a blow to survival hopes but to FPL managers who continue to be let down by the Clarets.
The final six Gameweeks offer them eight shots at victory, knowing at least three are realistically needed. Home matches versus Wolves, Aston Villa and Newcastle sit alongside a trip to Watford. But up first is a promising pair. They face West Ham just days after their second quarter-final against Lyon, then Southampton after their 6-0 weekend loss.
Underlying Stats
The main failure has been Wout Weghorst. Owned by over 50% of top 10k managers, he extended his goalless run to eight matches. His third return of just one point arrived when substituted after 55 minutes at Norwich.
Burnley have had the fewest shots on target throughout everyone’s last six matches and yet Weghorst is still nowhere near their biggest goal threat. Nine team mates have had more than his four goal attempts, including three defenders. Additionally, the Dutch forward has had none on target during this period.
Ownership for Double Gameweek
In fact, Sean Dyche’s side has just one player exceeding 80 FPL points this season – goalkeeper Nick Pope. He has 9.63% top 10k ownership and 4.1% overall.
Beyond Pope and Weghorst, Burnley are – understandably – barely touched. Their seven games without a clean sheet have been compounded by the benching of Connor Roberts at Norwich. Whether he wins his place back from Matt Lowton remains to be seen.
It’s interesting to see Maxwel Cornet back amongst the returns. Following fantastic early season form, he delivered a goal and assist against Everton, although FPL midfield spots have far more competition than elsewhere.
So far, there haven’t been many Burnley sales since the most recent Friday deadline. That’s because they’re about to play twice whilst Aston Villa, Leeds and Wolves don’t play at all. No matter how much Weghorst has flopped, there are still other fires to put out.
Furthermore, there is real potential in the Southampton match. The Saints are without a win in five matches, including home defeats to Newcastle and Watford alongside heavy 6-0 and 4-0 humiliations. Their form is horrific and, unlike Burnley, they have nothing to play for.
