What’s it like to be on the FPLShow?

Last modified date

FPLFamily’s Sam has been a regular on the FPLShow for a number of seasons now. She shares with us what a day being on the FPLShow is like and how the day works.

The FPLShow is recorded in Uxbridge, about 40 minutes drive from our house. This makes our journey to the FPL show way easier than for a number of the other guests who appear and need to catch planes or trains.

When we arrive we sign into the building and make our way to the green room. Being in the green room is great as there are always some excellent past and present footballers and pundits to talk to. Over the seasons we have met so many incredibly talented people. One of my personal highlights was meeting Ledley King.

Then it’s time to head into make-up to let the ladies work their magic. This is one of my favourite parts of the day!

From there there is just enough time for lunch and a chat with the producer. Then it’s into the studio.

The FPL Show goes out live and so after having our microphones sorted we’re live!

We asked Sam some questions about her experiences on the FPLShow.

Do you get nervous?

Not anymore. I remember doing our first FPLShow and being really concerned about saying something ridiculous. The first time we recorded the show it was in its original half an hour format so it was over really quickly. Now the show is an hour long and it still flies by! Having been in the studio so many times over the last few seasons it now feels very comfortable, most of the time you forget that you are even live.

Do you know what’s going to be on the show in advance?

Yes. We are given the key topics the morning of the show, or sometimes the night before. The opening section is always the same as it is on the highest scoring players from the Gameweek before, however the rest of the show changes. For example for this weeks FPLShow were were giving the following topics to prep:

  • Man City v Liverpool
  • Spurs
  • Arsenal
  • Gameweek 32 differentials – Mateta, Harrison, Iheanacho and Eriksen
  • Captain picks

What kind of things do you have written on your cards?

Ridiculously I spent probably an hour before we set off for the show making notes on my cards, and then rarely even look at them during the show. I like to have a couple of key stats on the card for each of the sections just in case my brain freezes and I need to help myself out. For example for this weeks show I had written down Salah’s xG before and after AFCON, as well as Kanes points average away at Villa Park.

What’s you favourite part of the show?

Personally I always really enjoy the dives in to specific clubs. This weeks was especially enjoyable as it was on Spurs! I do also really like the tweets, makes you think on you feet!

How do midweek fixtures impact the show?

The FPLShow normally goes out live 2-3pm UK time. However, when there are midweek fixtures it goes out in the evening after match day live. Depending on the timings of the matches the shows usually then record 11-12, or 11:30-12:30am. I enjoy these late night shows, they make for immediate gut reaction shows which are always interesting. However, they do mean not getting home to 2am!

How has the FPLShow changed over the years?

When we first started it was a much shorter show. It is now twice as long. The show also used to record in the evenings between 7-8pm, where as it is now an afternoon record. The show has also had a new producer since we have been appearing and this season Kelly Somers took over from Jules Breach as cohost.

Sam took the Fantasy Football Scout TikTok account with her one of her appearance on the FPLShow earlier on this season.
